TRPS
FESTIVAL OF ROCK POSTERS 2009
TRPS is pleased to announce that this year's TRPS Festival of Rock Posters
will be held on Saturday October 10th from 10:00 to 6:00. Once again
we'll be at the Hall of Flowers in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.
As always, the show will feature rock poster artists and dealers
from around the country, and is the one show not to be missed by
poster collectors and all fans of rock art. Those of you who were
with us at last year's show know that this has become a destination
event, and this year's lineup is already shaping up to be one of
our best ever.
The Hall of Flowers (AKA the Old County Fair Building) is located near the corner of Ninth and Lincoln. Admission is $10 ($5 for TRPS members with card).
Last year's Artist Relief Trust benefit poster by Emek (the surfing
skeleton) was a huge success, and we're following that up this time
with an offering from none other than Gary Houston (shown here on
right). This will be the official show poster, and will be a limited
edition, signed and numbered, hand-pulled silkscreen print, and
will be available only at the show. We're thrilled to have Gary
graciously contributing his efforts to what we plan to be an ongoing
series. Gary's one of the best in the business, and a big favorite
of many of us. Of course, all proceeds from the sale of this poster
will go straight into the TRPS Artist Relief Trust, to provide help
to poster artists in time of need.
Mark your calendars for Saturday October 10th, and make your plans to join us for one of the best rock poster shows anywhere.
We'll post the lineup of artists and vendors here as things develop, so keep checking this site for updates as they become available. We'll also be posting updates on Twitter (we're at TRPSorg), so check that out as well, and get the latest show info.
You don't want to miss this one. See you all there!
Confirmed list of Artists and Dealers:
PNE (Post New Explosionism: Emek, Justin Hampton, Jermaine Rogers),

Thief), Burlesque of North America, The Firehouse (Chuck Sperry

To Our TRPS Festival Patrons........
Last year we did a "take a number at the door" system for Emek's booth, and we plan to do the same this year for the much-anticipated PNE appearance. This time there's gonna be a twist.
The first fifty people in the door will draw numbers 1-50 at random, like a lottery. The fiftieth person in line will have the same chance at a high number as the first person in line. This will serve two purposes.
One, we want to discourage overnight camping in line. The Park police have to keep an eye on things during the night, and we don't want them coming to us with a fat bill for extra security. If being first in line doesn't assure you of being first to PNE (or Malleus, or whomever), there's no reason to show up at 10:00 on Friday night with a sleeping bag.
Second, this is a gesture to our members, regular attendees, and poster fans who come to buy for their own collections. It was obvious last year that many of the first people in the door were flippers (and their shills) who raided the best stuff, just to turn around and sell it on eBay. To us this is no different than ticket scalping. We produce these shows to promote the artists' work and for our patrons to enjoy, and we do not appreciate helping those who are just there to exploit our scene. We know we can't stop this practice, but this small gesture is a nod to those who deserve an equal shot.

ALTON KELLEY BENEFIT POSTER
A growing part of the TRPS effort is to help poster artists and their families
in time of need. Thanks to the efforts of noted Fillmore poster artist Dave Hunter,
we are pleased to offer this beautiful 18 X 24 limited edition silkscreen print to
honor the memory of one of the greats, Alton Kelley.
All proceeds from the sale of this killer poster (every dime) will go directly to
Kelley's family through the TRPS Artist Relief Trust account.
Printed in black, metallic silver, and colorful split fountain, the central image
is a Harley-Davidson engine (Kelley loved his toys). The dripping psychedelic
lettering would do Kelley proud.
We unveiled this print at our Fort Mason show in San Francisco on June 14th,
and these are the remaining copies from the show. Each is signed by the artist and
numbered (out of a 100-copy print run).
Please support this very worthwhile effort. Remaining quantities are limited,
and when they're gone, that's it.
This limited edition silkscreen is available now for a donation of $80 plus $10
shipping. If you want to include a message to Kelley's family, we'll be happy to
forward it to Marguerite and the kids.
Please make out a money order or personal check made payable to "TRPS Artist Relief Trust" (memo "Kelley Poster") and send it to: The Rock Poster Society PO Box 20309 Oakland, Ca. 94620-0309 |

| The
Rock Poster Society is the planet's largest organized
group of rock poster collectors, artists, and dealers. TRPS (as
we are known and pronounced like "trips")is an eclectic, non-profit,
non-denominational, committed and focused volunteer group who have
as their common bond an overriding joy in the art of the rock poster,
be it Fillmore and Avalon, punk, boxing style, off-the-wall or just
plain bonafide out-there.
Although we are based in Northern California, we have members
ALL over the country and around the world. So kick off your
shoes, take a stroll around, score some cool information, see
what's coming up in the poster world, and most of all, communicate
with other kindred poster-collecting souls. We also do encourage
you to become a member of TRPS and enjoy the added benefits of
membership. |
OUR MISSION:
- To generate interest and public awareness
of poster art.
- To act as a hub of information and resources
that shall be available to all.
- To encourage the free exchange of critical
archival advice and counsel.
- To embrace and perpetuate the ongoing tales
and folk lore surrounding these vibrant works and to offer insight
into their historical backgrounds.
- To bring to the forefront, through public
events and exhibits, the many great artists who created these
works and to unite them with their fans.
- To explore the continuing tradition of rock
poster art from its origins to its most recent incarnations.
- To attempt to form a worldwide link with
others who share the same interests and passions.
- And finally, to create a sense of community
and fellowship among those who are drawn to the joy of collecting
so that we may all bask in the wealth of our obsession.
