First pro rock poster: 1992
Temple, Texas
Billy Perkins, a renowned artist from Austin, Texas, has significantly impacted rock poster art with his vibrant and detailed designs. His journey began with a deep love for comic book art and psychedelic posters, which heavily influenced his style. Graduating with a BFA in Commercial Art from Texas State University, Perkins launched his studio, “Good Ideas Thru Bad Living,” in 1992.
Perkins’ posters have promoted legendary bands such as Alice in Chains, David Bowie, ZZ Top, and Metallica, among many others. His work has been featured in several notable publications, including Art of Modern Rock and Gigposters: Rock Art of the 21st Century. His unique blend of comic book-inspired imagery and rock poster aesthetics has earned him multiple awards, including the Austin Chronicle’s “Best Concert Poster” award.
Beyond posters, Perkins has designed CD packages for bands like The Arcangels and Cheap Trick.
“Billy is the living bridge between the old-school postering that made its mark for Austin via the Armadillo Art Squad, and a new generation taking things into their own capable hands.”
