Shane Edward Grogg has been a significant figure in the rock poster art scene for over two decades, bringing a unique blend of vibrant colors, intricate designs, and a distinctive airbrush technique to his work. Born and raised in Maryland, Shane’s journey in the art world began with his passion for music and album cover art and his deep connection to the Grateful Dead, which has heavily influenced his life and work since getting “On The Bus” in 1988.
Shane’s career took off after he relocated to California, first settling in Venice Beach and later moving to the Bay Area. Inspired by the murals in these areas, he began honing his airbrush skills, which would become a hallmark of his artistic style. His posters often feature bold, psychedelic patterns and striking visual elements that capture the spirit of the 60s and 70s rock scenes.
He holds the record for winning the Haight Ashbury Street Fair poster six times, beginning in a three-year run from 1994–1996, 2000, 2015, and the 40th Anniversary in 2017.
In 2000, Shane joined the team at WET Studios under the direction of George Mead, producing and collaborating on multiple large-scale airbrush album covers for Tower Records as well as major backdrops, stage headers, and commercial mural projects, notably the Fare Thee Well concerts in 2015.
In 2018, he migrated north to California’s famed Emerald Triangle, creating Mendocheeto Design and bringing a classic vintage style to the emerging and ever-growing cannabis community, creating posters and artwork for farms, products, and events, including the prestigious Emerald Cup and its sister event The Harvest Ball.
One of Shane’s proudest achievements is his long-standing role as the poster artist and art director for the annual Jerry Day Concert and Festival, a tribute to Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. His posters for this event are highly regarded for their ability to encapsulate the essence of the Grateful Dead’s music and legacy.
His notable clients include The Grateful Dead, Furthur, Dark Star Orchestra, The Neville Brothers, The Motet, The Wood Brothers, and The China Dolls. He has created posters for such venues as The Fillmore Denver, Sweetwater Music Hall, Tipitina’s in New Orleans, Terrapin Crossroads, and The Jerry Garcia Amphitheater
