Mike Dolgushkin was born in 1953 in San Francisco and started drawing at an early age. He began collecting Fillmore and Avalon posters while in high school and thought “I can do that.” Of course, it wasn’t easy at first but Mike eventually got proficient enough to design hundreds of flyers for legendary Bay Area musicians. When he finally entered the computer age Mike graduated to color posters, which led to his work for Moonalice.
His graphic skills are basically self-taught; he has almost no art training beyond examining his poster collection, acknowledging that in doing so he learned from the best. Mike does, however, have a Master’s in Public History and a Master’s in Library Science, and works in the California History Section of the State Library in Sacramento preserving the history of the state. He is also a co-author of the DeadBase series of Grateful Dead reference books, and is working with his friend Emiliano Echeverria on a trilogy chronicling the early history of San Francisco’s streetcar systems.
Mike, contact me about Aragon! Love your art!!
Lots of lovely art Michael.
Greetings from Strider Brown in New Mexico. Met you at Amanda’s in Moss Beach in the 1980s. You told me about working for Ben Friedman in North Beach. I once helped Ben get some posters from his warehouse. Wow what a collection. I still have the Charlatans triptych set of posters. One done by Bob Fried and the other two created by Rick Griffin.
I was lucky enough to work with Mike at the Postermatt in the summer of 1986. Deadbase was a huge computer printer out on that green and white paper. Mike even made me my first grateful dead bootlegs. Nothing but the best. Because of Mike, Rick Griffin signed two of my posters for free! Wish I had a signed poster of Mike’s to add to my collection. Mike if you read this, thank you for making the summer of 1986 magic. Miss you, Blandina, Ben and Lee. Hope you have been well and happy. Sorry was never able to get you anything from the RTA. Peace and Happiness
