Luke Martin

Suburban Avenger

Luke Martin / Suburban Avenger

Suburban Avenger Studios is a small Baltimore-based illustration and print outfit run by Luke Martin and his disloyal cat, Meatball.

He grew up on the eastern shore of Maryland in a place called Greensboro, a very rural farm town with one gas station and two whole stop lights. He attended North Caroline High School & spent most of my time cutting gym class and drawing retrofuturistic cities in the margins of his notes. In 2015 Luke attended college at Towson University, where he enrolled in a screen printing class. He fell in love with the medium instantly, learned as much as he could, and dropped out after a year and a half. Since then Luke spends most nights hunched over a desk drawing and drinking shitty coffee and eating hot pockets.

Past clients include Childish Gambino, Eddie Vedder, Dave Matthews Band, Phish, Foo Fighters, Nine Inch Nails, etc..

WHAT A LONG STRANGE TRIP IT'S BEEN… a year and some change of back and forth emails and many many late nights later, I'm absolutely delighted to share the first release of 2020 – my officially licensed tribute to the GRATEFUL DEAD. • • On sale NOW via Bottleneck gallery, this 18×36 7 color screenprint is my homage to one of the greatest bands to ever play – and also to one of the greatest illustrators to ever exist. For as long as I've been drawing I've fawned over Alphonse Mucha's iconic look and style – the way he so effortlessly blended so many images and elements into one seamless piece always dumbfounded me. I couldn't tell you how many Mucha-inspired pieces I created throughout my high school career – there’s too many to count. • • I’ve always wanted to make something Mucha-inspired in my professional (professional?) career – this project just felt like the perfect fit. From the start I really wanted to do something that embodied the spirit and the soul of grateful dead, as opposed to a focus on one specific element or point in time – borrowing a few tools from Mucha’s arsenal is what really brought this whole thing together. • • The regular color scheme will be for sale as a 72 hour TIMED EDITION – there’s also a limited alternative colorway and some gold foil variants for sale as well. In addition to each 18×36 print, there’ll be a 6×6 mini-print of just the stealie – included fo’ free with each order. It was a pleasure working on this with team bottleneck and team dead – couldn’t be more excited to finally have this out in the world. • • Link is in my bio – I’m really proud of this one 🌹💀🌹
